WA kids munch on vegies in March

Over 180 classrooms from 85 schools participated in our inaugural March Munch event. Students from across the state competed to earn the title of ‘Best Vegie Munchers in the West,’ and take home the top prize kindly donated by Smash Enterprises.

March Munch encourages students to choose vegies for Crunch&Sip for a whole month. Every student received a colour-in calendar card and was rewarded with a vegetable sticker for each day they ate vegetables. Classrooms could also participate in fun graphing activities using worksheets available on the Crunch&Sip website.

As part of the event students were asked to complete an online survey so we could create a snapshot of how children in WA munched on veg during March. In total, we received responses from 305 students.

We were pleased to see the variety of vegetables eaten by students! Forty percent of students who participated in the survey ate 4 or more different types of vegetables for Crunch&Sip during March Munch. The most popular vegetables all began with a ‘C’ – carrot, cucumber, corn and capsicum.

We found that, on average, vegetables were eaten for Crunch&Sip over 70% of the time during March Munch! That is an amazing result and shows how important the school environment is in encouraging kids to eat more veg.

Feedback from the event was extremely positive. Teachers reported that students were keen to participate in the challenge, with notable increases observed in the quantity and variety of vegies eaten.

“I really enjoyed encouraging and watching my class participate in March Munch. I was pleasantly surprised at the number of students who participated throughout the entire month and of the variety of vegetables that were consumed. Many of my students usually bring mainly fruit for Crunch&Sip, so having them give vegetables a try, was a fantastic idea.”

“My class really enjoyed taking part. For me, it was a great eye opener! I realised several students had never tasted or even heard of various veg. Several students continued to bring veg for Crunch&Sip after March Munch.”

Classrooms that completed and returned the teacher survey were entered into a prize draw. Congratulations to our lucky March Munch prize winners:
